They ordered it to be prepared by me, someone who had been sentenced for justifying terrorism." "Once one of the displays was countering terrorism. He eventually landed a job at the prison library, where, he "systematized books by topics," and organized a peculiar display. Any complaints could cost someone a promotion," Panarin said. The staff of the prison generally don’t want any problems with human rights defenders. I also knew a few human rights defenders, and that also helped I was never leaned on. "They also need people for 'smart' work when they need bosses to lead the work brigades. Panarin said he was treated "gently" in prison, possibly, he suspected, due to his schooling and NGO connections. In general, the 205 criminal code is respected among prisoners." They though I must have done something else as well. They couldn’t believe they had put me away for just a repost, clicking a computer mouse. "During one interrogation, the officer let slip that they were looking for anything that they could pin on activists of the 'Other Russia.' But, apparently, he realized he had blurted out too much, and didn’t talk about it anymore," Panarin said.įor prisoners and prison staff, Panarin was an oddity. Panarin and supporters are convinced he was targeted for his activities with the Other Russia political party. I was rather attracted to the style of the essay - combative, offensive. There was an image of a Molotov cocktail - an incendiary bottle. "The text contained strong criticism of the current government, and, by the way, also included, let’s say, representatives of the peoples of the Caucasus. Panarin admits the incriminating article was provocative and "popular with both left and right radicals." That same year, Andrei Bubeyev was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for reposting material about Crimea on a social-media network. In another high-profile case, Yevgenia Chudnovets was sentenced in 2016 to five months in jail for reposting on social media a child-abuse video that eventually led police to catch and convict two people. It was one of the harshest sentences meted out to anyone for an Internet-related offense, but not the only one. WATCH: Life Inside Moscow's Notorious Butyrka Prison The judge gave him a stiffer sentence than requested by prosecutors, who were seeking two years. Panarin was convicted on May 29, 2015, by the Moscow District Military Court for "justifying terrorism" and sentenced to three years in prison. Panarin is a member of the unregistered Other Russia party, formed by firebrand Russian writer and politician Eduard Limonov in 2010 after his National Bolshevik Party was outlawed. Panarin's arrest in his hometown of Barnaul on the banks of the Ob River was the first of many similar cases in Altai Krai, in what activists described as a crackdown. I can only image how much time was wasted to search through my account and all the postings to find something criminal," Panarin explained to RFE/RL. "As it turned out, a 'bad' post had been discovered that dated from two years earlier, from 2012. Panarin, who recently walked free from a prison in Biysk in southern Siberia's Altai Krai, says his troubles began on August 14, 2014, when he got a visit from authorities interested in one of his postings on the Russian social media network VKontakte. In Panarin’s case, however, the charges were ultimately ratcheted up to an even tougher charge: "supporting or justifying" terrorism, under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code. Panarin was among the first of hundreds to be charged for using the Internet to spread or incite "hatred." As criticism and a backlog of cases mounted, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently made a rare climbdown, softening the punishment for some Internet hate crimes. But one day they came to me because of one click of the mouse, which was viewed at best by a dozen people, plus security officials," Panarin told the Siberia Desk of RFE/RL's Russian Service. "I was working in a peaceful profession - architecture. In one of his first interviews since being released, Panarin, a political activist, says that his case left him convinced literally anyone "can land behind bars" in Russia today. He also rubbed shoulders with prisoners who he says did openly admit to using the Internet to distribute materials in support of terrorism. He served his full sentence at a prison in Siberia, where convicts and staff alike were awestruck that he had been imprisoned for, as he puts it, "clicking a computer mouse." Panarin says prison staff treated him "gently," giving him a job in the prison library, where he was once tasked with setting up a counterterrorism display. Liking an Internet post with some text and a picture of a Molotov cocktail was enough to get Sergei Panarin jailed for three years on charges of "justifying terrorism" in Russia in 2015.

I agree with what others said, that it can make your sets more boring. I play a game where I guess a track's key and check I'm usually right.īut I also recommend after getting it, not being totally constricted by it. I'm also unbothered if I don't have it, am playing b2b with someone and don't know their key, or playing not my music. Sometimes I purposely jump keys to shift energy, or create impact. I also ignore mixed in key, embrace chaos, and play whatever track my intuition tells me to play next. Mixing two tracks way off key can be a trainwreck. Also tends to turn out way better if I'm long mixing 2+ tracks one of which has vocals, which I do a lot in artist sets. It helps with really long resident sets (like 5+ hours), unfamiliar tracks I just downloaded, or genres I don't really like. On a side note, if you are going corporate the Mobile Beat 200 is a good place to start for a collection idea. After a few gigs you will know what tunes go with each other to keep the flow going anyway. What I mean by this is if you have a crate with say 500 tunes in it, it will bring your choice down to about 10. If you see a tune with similar BPM, key and power chances are it will fit. This helps when you have large crates of various styles of music. If you use the software it also puts an energy/power value in as well as the key. Now for wedding and corporate work it's different, but MIK can still help. I try to explain to them that if the mix sounds good they are still mixing in key, just doing it by ear. A lot of my DJ friends don't use it, but they we all come from the vinyl days. I use it as a guide not a rule, it definitely makes long transitions sound better. It can get a bit boring listing to sets that are so polished in terms of music theory and sometimes breaking that up is far more enjoyable. Of course, you don’t want to clang melodies but there are plants of intro and outro mixes that let you not worry about that, not to mention, ways to mix that don’t clash. There is one thing though that u/theoriginalsnub has touched on, that solely mixing in key can lead to a somewhat limited and formulaic set / selection, and that sometimes breaking that mold of only sticking to what immediately harmonically works is boring - mixing two tracks that are essentially discordant can have the effect of changing things up and we subconsciously realize that as listeners. To be honest, this was how everyone mixed (just practiced what sounded right) except a few Djs, the most obvious example was Sasha who was famous for long transitions that worked perfectly - he effectively pioneered harmonic mixing 15 years before MIK even existed.

This list shows the victims Benjiro has killed:Īppearances The Ones Who Live Season 1 It's revealed that Michonne had Benjiro create an iPhone portrait of Carl for Rick which helps to convince Rick to come home to Alexandria. Benjiro encourages Michonne to believe a little bit longer. Michonne thanks Benjiro for how much he had helped her with his drawings, telling the young man that now that Rick's found her, Michonne is looking for him. Rick always knew that he'd see Michonne again and when he started giving up hope, Benjiro told Rick to believe a little bit longer. Benjiro explains that Rick had wanted the drawings for until he saw Michonne again, and here she is. Identifying Michonne and Judith by name, Benjiro asks if Judith is here too, but Michonne reassures Benjiro that Judith is okay even though she's not there with them. Michonne tearfully tells Benjiro that the boy is Carl, and Benjiro notes that Michonne is more open since it took Rick 3 years to say any names. Benjiro explains that Rick would come every few months and ask for a new one, but while there was a boy that Rick would ask him to draw, Benjiro could never get it right for Rick. Michonne realizes that Benjiro is the one who drew her and Judith which he confirms, recognizing her. Some of the other televisions at the stand hold portraits as well while Benjiro is working on carving into another iPhone. At Benjiro's Portraiture and Art stand, on an old television screen, a portrait of a woman and a boy is carved, similar to the carvings on Rick's iPhones. In a flashback, Rick notices Benjiro's stand in Millenium Park after arguing with Jadis. Writers use caesurae to create variation in the rhythm of a poem, or to emphasize words in the middle of lines that might not otherwise receive attention. This stanza from John Ashbery's poem "Our Youth" gives a more modern example of caesura using three different types of punctuation: ellipsis in the first two lines, a period in the third, and finally a comma in the fourth.Ĭan't use, || that it was created for. Sweet flattery, || then she loves but me alone. If I lose thee, || my loss is my love's gain,Īnd losing her, || my friend hath found that loss,īoth find each other, || and I lose both twain,Īnd both for my sake lay on me this cross,īut here's the joy, || my friend and I are one, This excerpt from Sonnet 42 by Shakespeare contains an example of caesura in each line except the fourth. Was loaded on top of him: || it would travel farīoth of the caesurae in the second line are feminine, because each pause follows an unstressed syllable: Ice- clad, || out bound, || a craft for a prince. I never heard before of a ship so well furbishedĪnd coats of mail. Were piled upon him, || and precious gear. They stretched their beloved lord in his boat, Ice-clad, || outbound, || a craft for a prince. This example shows that, although the use of caesurae can create an unusual or jarring rhythm that might be perceived by some as more "modern," it has actually been in use for many centuries. Poems written in Old English often used lots of caesura, and Seamus Heaney's modern English translation of Beowulf does an excellent job of preserving the original text's prolific use of caesurae. Terminal caesura occurs near the end of a line, such as the dash in the line "Then there’s a pair of us - don’t tell!"īeowulf is one of the oldest surviving poems written in Old English.Medial caesura occurs in the middle of a line, such as the dash in "To be, or not to be - that is the question.".Initial caesura occurs toward the beginning of a line, such as the comma in "To be, or not to be - that is the question.".Instances of caesura are also sometimes referred to based on where they occur in the line. Generally speaking, feminine caesura often are a bit shorter and feel "softer." Masculine ceasura often feel harder and more abrupt. My words fly up, || my thoughts re main be low A feminine caesura follows an unstressed syllable, as in:Ī masculine caesura, on the other hand, is one that follows a stressed syllable, as in: In poetry that uses meter, each caesura is defined as "masculine" or "feminine" depending on whether the pause comes after a stressed or unstressed syllable. To be, || or not to be - || that is the question.Īs you can see, from this example, it is possible to have multiple caesurae in a single line of poetry. Here's an example of how the double pipe is used to mark caesura in context: When analyzing poetry, poets and scholars sometimes mark instances of caesura by using a symbol called a "double pipe," which looks like this: ||. The comma after "To be" is another example of caesura in this line, though the pause is arguably a briefer one. Read the line aloud yourself and you will hear the pause. In this famous line from Shakespeare's Hamlet, the dash in the middle of the line represents a pronounced pause. To be, or not to be - that is the question. The Romans and Greeks, however, wrote their poetry using much more rigid conventions of meter than are used in English verse, and the word caesura has long since come to mean simply a pause in the middle of a line, such as: Here's how to pronounce caesura: sez- yoo-ra Caesura in DepthĬaesurae have been used in poetry since the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans-though, back then, the term was even more specific and referred to pauses that actually threw off the meter of a line of poetry.

That semester – the beginning of her junior year – Miles took a seat in Kristina Kays’ psychology class. “Then spring semester started, and I just went back down. Winter break came, and the stress let up for several weeks. It was really hard for me to get past that.” Being a psychology major, I knew the tactics. “My best friend got me to go to the counseling center and take my first steps in the right direction,” Miles says. Though Miles suspects that depression has affected her for several years, she was diagnosed only a year ago. It’s no easy thing for a psychology major to admit she needs mental help. “There’s a bunch of good ones, but there’s always the one or two negative ones I don’t want to read, so I’m just going to steer clear of all of them.” Professor’s story builds courage Though most comments are positive, lauding Miles for her transparency and courage, she has not read them. More than 42,000 comments – and that did not include the 1,000-plus messages in her Facebook inbox. Six weeks later the media buzz had quieted, but the number of people sharing her post had climbed to 357,844, with 42,360 comments. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Zooey Deschanel even mentioned it on their own Facebook pages. Media outlets from the United States and the United Kingdom to Germany and Australia had told her story. Miles’ Facebook post was only intended for family and friends, but within days it had reached millions, starting a national conversation about depression.Įight days later, nearly 300,000 people had shared her post on Facebook, reaching millions. Posted by Bekah Miles on Sunday, August 23, 2015 I want you to hear me out.)Today, I am coming out. (Dear mom and dad, please don’t kill me over this permanent choice. But when she looks at the tattoo from her vantage point, viewing it upside-down, it reads, “Save me.” Fashioned as an ambigram (displaying different messages from different perspectives), the script inked just above her knee reads “I’m fine” to those looking at Miles. Miles posted two photos with her confession showing the tattoo, still swollen around the edges. Just an irrevocable step for an intelligent, introverted psychology major at George Fox University who wanted to help others, but discovered she has her own monster to battle – a battle that would gain international attention within days of her online post. Just a status update to friends and family. Then she walked away from Facebook, torn between chewing her fingernails down to stubs or shrugging her shoulders and insisting it was no big deal. Then she did what millions do every minute – she clicked the “post” button. But since that wasn’t going to change anytime soon, maybe it was time to change her approach. She was so tired of hiding, tired of pretending, tired of her illness. It's time to shine light on the darkness of depression, and we're loving that beauty is helping to start this serious conversation.Bekah Miles sat in her chair, staring. "Mental illness is not a choice," Bekah reminded her friends. The recently viral semicolon tattoo movement is another design that is seeking to take the stigma out of mental illness. and that's all I could really ask for."īekah's isn't the first ink that's raised awareness about the struggle of depressive disorders. "I may only be one person, but one can save another. "You'd be surprised by how many people YOU know that struggle with depression, anxiety, or other mental illness," she stated. The psychology major said that the prominent location of her new ink (the front of her leg) will force her to talk to others about her struggle. It reminds me that people who may appear happy, may be at battle with themselves." "To me, it means that others see this person that seems OK, but, in reality, is not OK at all. "When everyone else sees it, they see 'I'm fine,' but from my viewpoint, it reads 'save me,'" Bekah explained to her Facebook friends. Instead of hiding her diagnosis, 20-year-old student Bekah Miles is bravely sharing her depression with the world via her new tattoo, which she hopes will start a conversation about mental illness. Consider Robin Williams - the comedic actor fought with depression until he tragically took his own life in 2014, and only his inner circle knew about this battle. On the rare evenings you can push yourself to go out with friends, you find that you've mastered fake normalcy, and no one can tell anything is wrong. Some days, washing your hair feels like a task of Sisyphean proportions. Living with depression is a daily struggle. |
